Yves Saint Laurent is one of the biggest and most successful fragrance houses with over 200+ perfumes and colognes to their name. And there’s a good reason why they have so many fragrances and have enjoyed popularity since the mid-1960s. That’s because they’ve developed quite the reputation for creating scents that appeal to both men and women. And with hundreds of fragrances under their belt, they probably make a fragrance that’s suitable for just about anyone.
As you would imagine, however, with so many colognes and perfumes in their collection, it can be difficult to sort out just one that you may potentially find appealing. That’s why we’ve decided to do our own research and find out which of their colognes are truly the best. Rating their perfumes, however, will be a task for another day. So without further ado, below are the best YSL colognes currently available.
Best YSL Colognes
10. Yves St. Laurent L’Homme Sport
Introduced in 2014, this cologne from YSL is designed for men who give 110% of themselves to whatever they do. This scent is designed for active go-getters who not only can’t be held down but also can’t be defeated. It does this by covering the man wearing it in an aura of scents that can only be described as youthful and energetic. At its top, this cologne has notes of verbena and bergamot. Its heart notes include the lush fragrances of coriander and freshly cut wood, all the while it’s base notes smell like the perfect blend of amber and cedar.
9. Yves St. Laurent La Nuit de L’Homme
This YSL cologne was released in 2009 and has a simple combination of notes that seem to come together in exciting ways. This cologne has a nice moderate sillage and longevity, too. That allows the wearer to put it on in the morning and continue to wear it well into the evening hours. It has a singular top note, only a few heart notes and a base that contains only the scents of vetiver and caraway, but somehow it works. In this fragrance can be smelled notes of cardamom and bergamot, lavender and cedar. It’s mysterious, exotic and just plain works well as a cologne for the modern man.
8. Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme
L’Homme is the fragrant cologne that was designed by Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo and released in 2006. It’s a scent that’s spicy and citrusy with just a taste of woody notes underlying all of it. It starts off with its vibrant top notes that include the fragrances of lemon, ginger, and bergamot. It then kicks in its heart notes, which include fragrances of violet, basil and white pepper. The cologne then ends on its base notes that include the fragrances of Tonka bean, cedar, and vetiver. And it has a moderate sillage and longevity that gives the wearer plenty of time to enjoy this fragrant combination of scents.
7. Yves Saint Laurent Y
Released in the Fall of 2018, this cologne hasn’t really been around long enough to earn a following, but we feel quite strongly that when men do get a chance to smell this fragrance, then they’re going to love it. That’s because it’s a scent that smells like it belongs to a man who wears nothing but their blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a leather jacket. It has top fragrances of ginger, apple, and bergamot in its scent profile, along with the heart notes of geranium, sage, and juniper berries. All of these fragrances stand on this colognes base notes, a base which includes the scents of cedar, leather, and amber wood.
6. Opium By Yves St. Laurent For Men
Opium Pour Homme is a YSL cologne that’s been around for quite a while now. When this fragrance was initially released in 1995, Friends and Seinfeld were in full swing on primetime television and the blockbuster movies in theaters were Seven and Braveheart. Although that may make this cologne sound dated, this fragrance has actually held up quite well over the years. In fact, a lot of younger men have embraced this cologne again. That’s probably because it has the exotic top notes of star anise and black currant, heart notes of pepper and base notes of vanilla mixed with cedar. It’s a classic scent that can be used quite well by the modern man.
5. Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent
This musky scent has been a favorite since it was launched. It has top notes of coriander and clary sage, bergamot and Artemesia. Below those enticing notes are its heart fragrances, which include the scents of jasmine, orris root, cinnamon, and carnation. At its very base exist the notes of amber, Tonka bean, musk, and leather. It also seems to have a splash of honey that permeates throughout it. It’s a classic original scent that can be easily enjoyed by the modern man, regardless of his age or lifestyle. And it’s a scent that can be worn from dusk to dawn and beyond.
4. Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme Libre
Just because a cologne is young and vibrant doesn’t mean that it can’t also be masculine. if you have any doubts as to whether this is the case or not, then all you have to do is check out this wonderful cologne. It allows the wearer to put out an energetic vibe but does so without infringing on the wearer’s masculinity. This cologne does this with the judicious use of its base notes, heart notes and base notes. At its top, this cologne smells like bergamot, star anise, and basil, at least until its heart appears fragrant with the notes of pink pepper and nutmeg. And finally, its base has notes of patchouli and vetiver.
3. Yves Saint Laurent L’homme Intense
Styled after its successful 2006 cologne, this updated version of L’homee Intense for Men is designed to be a fragrance that’s well-suited to the office environment but can also be worn for a night out on the town. When first applied, it has a combination of scents that come together quite well, and these top notes include black pepper, bergamot and the citrusy zing of lemons. It’s heart notes include the scents of violets and orange blossoms, all while this cologne’s base notes chime in with the scents of cedar, ambergris, benzoin, and suede. It’s a classic and definitely masculine scent.
2. Yves Saint Laurent Kouros Silver
Released to an eager public in 2015, this Yves St. Laurent cologne caught a lot of attention when it came out. That’s not only because of its iconic bottle but mainly due to the quality cologne that can be found inside of it. This scent is a reinvention of the original Kouros cologne that was released during the early 1980s, except this one is a lot more of a mature scent than that one was. This fragrance has one single top note to its formula, and that’s the scent of crisp apples. This scent is then followed by a sage-scented heart note and is finished off with the earthy notes of wood and amber.
1. YSL M-7 Oud Absolu For Men
Men who consider themselves to be dark and mysterious may want to try out a YSL cologne that magnifies that aura and M-7 Oud Absolu may just be that fragrance. It has an aromatic Oriental scent that has a moderate sillage and enough longevity for it to carry it from work into the wee hours of the night. This product has top notes of Mandarin oranges, middle notes of patchouli and base notes that include the fragrant scents of agarwood, myrrh, and French Labdanum. It’s a mysterious fragrance designed for men who want to keep an exotic aura around themselves all day and all night.

A Guide To YSL Colognes
Yves St. Laurent, often abbreviated as YSL, is a fragrance design house that contains hundreds of different perfumes and colognes. And just the sheer volume of the collection often make people feel like it’s extremely difficult to find one of these perfumes that fit their style, or that they’re missing out on some hidden gems. To solve that problem, we decided to write this guide. A guide that introduces our readers to YSL colognes. With that lofty purpose in mind, let’s wander out into the thick of things and find out a little bit about this iconic fragrance house and their cologne collections.
The History Behind YSL
YSL is a company that was founded by Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint Laurent. Mr. Laurent was born August 1936 in Oren, Algeria and would become an assistant to Christian Dior in 1953 at the age of seventeen years old. When Christian Dior died in October of 1957, Laurent would be named the head of the House of Dior—at the age of just twenty-one years of age. In 1960, Laurent would be drafted into the army during the Algerian War of Independence, which would result in him losing his position at the House of Dior. After less than three weeks in military service, Laurent was admitted to the hospital due to the stress caused by his fellow soldiers hazing him. While he was hospitalized, he then learned that he had lost his position at Dior, which further aggravated his condition. Eventually, he was transferred to Val-de-Grace Military Hospital in Paris, France, and it’s there that he received massive doses of psychoactive drugs and sedatives. He was also subjected to electroshock therapy during this time.
When Saint Laurent was released from the hospital, he sued Dior for breach of contract, a suit that he ended up winning. After a brief period, he would start the Yves Saint Laurent YSL fashion house with his partner Pierre Berge. During the 1960s and 1970s, YSL became extremely popular and released interesting looks that include beatnik fashion, safari jackets, and classic tuxedo suits for women. In 1964, YSL launched its first fragrance: Y For Women. This was soon followed by a wide range of other fragrances including Rive Gauche, Opium, and Paris. Currently, YSL offers over 212+ fragrances in its collection.
Since they’ve been making intriguing perfumes and colognes for the last 56+ years, it’s no surprise that they’ve worked with some of the most famed perfumers in the business. These perfumers include Laurent Bruyere, Jean-Claude Ellena, Dora Baghriche, Mathilde Bijaoui, Sophia Grojsman, Jean-Francois Latty, Amandine Clerc-Marie, Hamid Merati-Kashani, Raymond Chaillan, Dominique Ropion, Pierre Bourdon, Jacques Cavallier, Harry Fremont, Pierre Wargnye, Carlos Benaïm, Quentin Bisch, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Polge, Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Karine Dubreuil, and many more.
